Cookies, depending on the time they remain active, can be divided into session or persistent cookies:

Session and persistent cookies: Session cookies are designed to store data temporarily while the user accesses a web page. They are usually used to store information that only needs to be kept for the provision of the service requested by the user on a single occasion. In the case of persistent data, the data continues to be stored on the device for a specified period, thereby facilitating the control of chosen preferences without having to re-enter specific parameters each time the website is visited.

Additionally, depending on the entity that manages them, cookies can be classified as first-party or third-party:

First-party or third-party cookies: First-party cookies are those sent to the user’s terminal equipment from equipment or a domain managed by the same publisher as the one from which the service requested by the user is provided. Third-party cookies, on the other hand, are those sent to the user’s terminal from a computer or domain that the publisher does not manage, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.

As far as the purpose is concerned, cookies can be:

Technical / personalization/analysis/advertising cookies: the technical cookies would be those that allow the control of the transit and communication of data; the personalization cookies, those that would enable the users to access according to some specific characteristics that are collected (browser, language, etc.). The analysis cookies are those that allow the person responsible for them to track and measure the behavior of users on the websites to which they are linked, collect data on user behavior, and enable the creation of a user profile. Finally, the advertising companies collect data on the management of advertising space.
